Hormone Therapy

Hormone therapy is a gentle, effective way to support your body through hormonal changes, helping to restore balance and bring relief from symptoms like hot flashes, sleep disturbances, weight gain, anxiety, depression, and joint pain. At Maliya, we understand how profoundly these shifts can affect your wellbeing, and we’re here to offer personalized hormone therapy tailored to your unique needs. Our goal is to address the root cause of your symptoms, empowering you to feel like yourself again.

What is hormone therapy?

Hormone therapy is a vital treatment option for women experiencing symptoms associated with perimenopause and menopause. Menopause marks the natural end of a woman’s reproductive years and is characterized by significant hormonal changes, particularly a decrease in estrogen and progesterone levels. Hormone therapy is often prescribed to alleviate common symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, weight changes, headaches, body pain and vaginal dryness. By restoring hormone levels, hormone therapy can also help prevent health issues like osteoporosis and potentially support heart health and sexual health, enhancing overall quality of life during this transitional phase.

The specific hormones used in hormone therapy—such as estrogen, progesterone, and, in some cases, testosterone—allow for personalized treatment plans that cater to each woman’s unique needs. This tailored approach not only improves quality of life but also empowers women to embrace this transitional phase with confidence and comfort. Understanding menopause as a natural part of aging reinforces the importance of individualized care in navigating this significant life change.

How do I know if hormone therapy is right for me?

Hormone therapy can support you in managing the following:

  • Menopause: managing symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, and hormonal changes.

  • Perimenopause: addressing early symptoms like irregular periods, mood swings, and sleep disturbances.

  • Sleep issues: helping with insomnia and disrupted sleep patterns commonly experienced during menopause and perimenopause.

  • Weight concerns: supporting healthy weight management, particularly in response to hormonal shifts.

  • Mood concerns: managing mood swings, anxiety, and depression related to hormonal changes.

  • Irregular menstruation: treating menstrual irregularities that often occur during perimenopause.

  • Painful menstruation (dysmenorrhea): alleviating pain associated with menstruation.

  • Heavy bleeding (menorrhagia): offering solutions for excessive menstrual bleeding.

  • Cyclic migraines/headaches: addressing hormonal migraines or headaches that follow menstrual cycles.

  • Painful intercourse: providing treatment for vaginal dryness and discomfort during intercourse.

  • Frequent urinary tract infections (UTIs): offering prevention and treatment strategies for recurrent UTIs.

  • Bladder leakage (urinary incontinence): managing bladder control issues commonly associated with aging and hormonal changes.

Our experienced nurse practitioner has education in both traditional and functional medicine as it pertains to menopause. She uses synthetic hormones, bioidentical hormones, and/or alternative treatments to ensure that your specific needs are met. Recognizing that each woman’s experience is unique, she believes that a treatment plan should reflect that individuality. No single solution works for everyone, and an individualized approach allows for a more comprehensive and effective management of menopausal symptoms, tailored to each woman’s specific needs and preferences.

Details

  • Menopause, as defined by the North American Menopause Society (NAMS), is reached 12 months after a woman's last menstrual period, marking the end of reproductive ability. Menopause typically occurs around age 52, though it can happen earlier or later, and is characterized by a significant decline in estrogen, progesterone, and androgen levels. This hormonal shift often leads to symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, and vaginal dryness, and can be a challenging transition for women if not treated appropriately.

Before menopause, women experience perimenopause, a transitional phase that can begin as early as their 40s and last several years. During perimenopause, hormone levels fluctuate, causing irregular periods, sleep disturbances, and emotional changes. Many women also experience symptoms like headaches, weight gain, and heightened sensitivity to stress. The intensity and duration of these symptoms vary greatly between individuals, influenced by factors like genetics, lifestyle, and ethnicity. Both NAMS and the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) recognize that while menopause is a natural life stage, its symptoms and related health risks, such as osteoporosis and heart disease, may need medical attention. Ongoing research emphasizes the importance of personalized care to effectively manage symptoms and promote long-term well-being.

  • Bioidentical hormones are plant-derived substances designed to replicate the exact molecular structure of hormones naturally produced by the body, such as estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and DHEA. They are often used in hormone replacement therapy to help menopausal women replenish diminished hormones. Since bioidentical hormones are chemically identical to those produced by the body, many women feel more comfortable using them as part of their treatment. Our hormone specialist will support you in finding the solution that is right for your body and your values!

One of the key benefits of bioidentical hormone therapy (BHRT) is its ability to be customized. Compounded bioidentical hormones, which may come in various forms such as creams, gels, capsules, or suppositories, are made in specialized pharmacies. This allows for tailored dosing that fits each patient’s unique hormonal needs, offering a more personalized approach to care.

  • Many women are interested in exploring alternatives to hormone therapy for managing menopausal symptoms, including pharmaceuticals typically used for mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, and ADHD. However, most prefer non-pharmaceutical therapies. Non-hormonal treatments, such as herbal remedies like black cohosh, dong quai, St. John's wort, hops, wild yam, ginseng, and evening primrose oil, are often considered for their potential benefits in alleviating symptoms. Integrative practices like acupuncture, yoga, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and mindfulness have also shown promise in improving well-being during menopause.

While evidence for these alternatives is still evolving, many women find that combining them with hormone therapy enhances symptom relief and offers a more personalized approach to care. A healthcare provider can help assess the best options based on individual needs. With education in both traditional and functional medicine, our hormone expert combines multiple treatments to ensure that each woman’s unique experience is addressed.

  • Nurse practitioners (NPs) in Canada are highly trained healthcare professionals who combine the science of medicine with the philosophy of nursing, allowing them to provide a unique and holistic approach to patient care. While both NPs and doctors have advanced medical education, NPs are registered nurses who complete additional schooling, typically at the master's or post-master’s level, which equips them to offer a wide range of healthcare services. This includes diagnosing and treating illnesses, prescribing medications, and ordering diagnostic tests like lab work or imaging (Duff et al., 2021).

What sets nurse practitioners apart is their patient-centered focus, blending the compassionate care philosophy of nursing with advanced medical training. This enables them to spend more time with patients, listening to concerns and tailoring treatment plans to fit each individual’s needs. NPs often work alongside doctors but can also operate independently within their scope of practice, providing care in a variety of settings, from urban clinics to rural communities.

This approach is particularly well-suited for patients with hormone or sexual health concerns, as it allows for a comprehensive, individualized treatment plan that addresses both the physical and emotional aspects of these issues. By combining the science of medicine with the patient-centered philosophy of nursing, nurse practitioners are able to offer more personalized care, ensuring that each patient feels heard, understood, and empowered in managing their health. In my practice, I prioritize creating a safe and supportive environment where patients can openly discuss their concerns, leading to more effective and tailored care solutions for hormone and sexual health challenges.

Protocol and Pricing

Our hormone therapy protocol is as follows:

Session 1: Initial Women's Hormone Health Session (45-60 min | $285)

This initial session is focused on getting to know you, your medical and surgical history, and your concerns or symptoms related to menopause. You will discuss how hormone changes can affect your health as you transition through menopause and explore potential treatment options, including Menopause Hormone Therapy (MHT) if appropriate. After the appointment, our nurse practitioner will review any existing bloodwork or imaging and order relevant diagnostics. You will receive requisitions for required testing and instructions via email or fax within the week, ensuring that our nurse practitioner has a complete picture of your health for follow-up discussions.

Session 2: Results Review & Personalized Treatment Planning (30-45 min | $215)

This session will be booked as soon as you have completed your required testing from Session 1. In this session, you will review the results of your initial bloodwork and diagnostics. Our nurse practitioner will discuss your treatment options, which could range from reassurance and lifestyle adjustments (like diet, exercise, yoga, or Pilates) to Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) options (such as acupuncture or supplements) and pharmacotherapy (including hormone therapy). This session is all about personalizing your treatment to what makes you comfortable. A new blood requisition will be sent for your next set of tests prior to Session 3.

Session 3: Follow-up & Progress Review (30min | $145)

About three months after Session 2, you and our nurse practitioner will meet to review how you are progressing. You will review your treatment plan, your second set of bloodwork, and any changes in your symptoms or well-being. This is a check-in to ensure your treatment is effective and to make any necessary adjustments. Another blood requisition will be sent for your next tests before Session 4.

Session 4: Ongoing Treatment Review & Adjustments (30 min | $145)

Six months after Session 3, you and our nurse practitioner will review your third set of bloodwork and discuss how your treatment plan is working long-term. You will have a check in on your symptoms and overall health and fine-tune your plan to ensure it continues to support you effectively through your menopause journey. Hormone levels will be monitored to ensure your treatment remains aligned with your needs.  Another blood requisition will be sent for your next tests before Session 5.

Session 5: Long-term Health Review & Treatment Optimization (30 min | $145)

Six months after Session 4, you and our nurse practitioner will review your third set of bloodwork and discuss how your treatment plan is working long-term. We’ll check in on your symptoms and overall health, making adjustments as necessary to ensure continued support through your menopause journey. Since hormone levels and symptoms can continue to change, we’ll typically schedule your next session in six months, though you can always contact the clinic if a review is needed sooner.

Our hormone specialist is available for continued support during and after your hormone protocol. If you encounter any concerns or questions throughout or following your treatment, we invite you to book either of the following sessions:

Prescription Refill (15 min | $75)
