How Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy Changed My Life

After a horrific car accident in 2001, I spent 15 years on the road to recovery. Not only did I develop chronic physical pain from my injuries, but the PTSD from the accident had me living in constant “fight or flight,” experiencing debilitating anxiety and emotional dysregulation on a daily basis.

I spent years down the normal allopathic route; physiotherapy, psychiatry, medications, etc., but I wasn’t getting any better. Exhausted from this path of rehabilitation, a friend of mine suggested that I try Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST).

BCST is a hands-on, gentle touch therapy where the therapist connects with your body’s connective tissue network. Memories, traumas, and emotions are often stored in this network and, when it’s held and safe, the body can release these energies without retraumatizing the system. This release in the tissues also creates relief from psychological and emotional stress, physical pain, illness and more.

In my first BCST session, the practitioner held my feet and my head and gently laid her hands on my abdomen. It felt quite supportive and nurturing and I managed to relax on the table, but was skeptical of the effectiveness. I wondered, “How could something so gentle and nurturing truly impact my system?”

With each session, my body experienced more and more sensation, shifting, and release. In my third session, my body fell into a deep relaxation and then started to gently vibrate. I felt a wave of emotion come up and release. My body continued to shake and let go. It was the most profound sensation. I felt exhausted but so free at the end of the session. For the first time in years, my body felt relaxed and my anxiety wasn’t all-consuming. I went home and slept for 14 hours. The next day, I felt like I had let go of a weight that I didn’t even recognize was holding me down.

I continued to see my practitioner every two weeks and my entire system started to shift. I experienced less anxiety, my nervous system was more regulated, and I felt more calm in navigating my day to day life. My pain shifted and I felt more comfortable in my body.

Now, many years later, I’ve learned that BCST helps us release what we’re carrying in our bodies from our childhoods, our families, our ancestries, and more. However, it also helps us become more resilient and regulated in managing the stresses and traumas that we encounter in our day-to-day lives. Something deeply profound happens in the body when it is held, nurtured, and witnessed, and I believe this is something that we all need to heal.

If this sounds like something your body is craving, please don’t hesitate to reach out and learn more about this remarkable modality.
